>>> hello, everyone. we are following breaking news in newtown, a town between stanford and hartford. we're following reports that there has been a shooting at an elementary school. an elementary school named sandy hook. one photograph to share with you as crews rush to the scene. let me bring in my colleague jason carroll who has been working his sources. what do we know? >> disturbing story. the shooting happening at sandy hook elementary school on dickerson drive. this is coming to us from one of our affiliates. police are reporting a number of injuries. the nature of the injuries at this point are unclear. we're going to be checking that throughout the morning. state police sources say that one person is dead. earlier reports of a second shooter. that has not been confirmed at this point. a few more reports, apparently the shooting was reported shortly after 9:40 a.m. this morning. police reported that a shooter was in the -- apparently in the main office. >> which is hard to tell with this image that we're looking at because that's sort of bird's-eye view of the sch

in newtown, connecticut. a town in mourning to say the least. the images that we have seen throughout this town are heartbreaking. makeshift memorials on several street corners. everything from teddy bears to candles to flowers and angels' wings. it is a beautiful community here. just so quiet and pristine and you call it because what you can hear about newtown, connecticut, and it is so filled with grief. it is only the beginning, though, as this town prepares to bury those who were killed on friday. there will be so many burials. the first of the funerals begins today at 1:00 p.m. these would beautiful children, jack pinto, noah pozner. it is going to be a tragic several weeks. no one knew that more than president obama who came here to speak to this town at a touching memorial last night. >> surely we do better than this. if there is even one step we can take to save another child or another parent or another town from the grief that'ses have e visited tucson, aurora, oak creek and newtown, communities from columbine to blacksburg before that, surely we have an obligation to try.

at newtown elementally school. there is a map right there. sandy hook. let me read more of what i'm getting here. according to one of our affiliates, the connecticut state police are responding to that shooting at newtown. excuse me. not newton. newtown. the shooting happened on dickinson. it's newtown. i said newton before but it's newtown. we don't know if there's any injuries but they are deploying units and cnn is sending crews and our affiliates are sending crews as well. they are en route to an elementary school in newtown. we are working our sources and our affiliates there in the area to try to figure out what is going on. as you know, law enforcement -- and we do here at cnn and all news organizations take it very seriously any time there are reports of a gun or shots fired at a school, elementary, junior high school, college, what have you. and that's what we are doing right now, checking on that for you. we're getting some information in. our producers are gathering it for us. we'll be back with the very latest on the other side of this break. don't go anywhere.
